Our History: Why Pomksy and Why Breed?

Larry and I were on the hunt for the perfect dog breed for a year and a half! I grew up with Giant Schnauzers averaging 80-90 pounds and LOVED a dog who could give you a full hug back (and topple you over and grab anything they want from the kitchen counter...). Whereas Larry already had Angel for eight years, and she was a teeny tiny adorable fluff of only 12 pounds. We had a large middle area to navigate.

Pomskies may seem like a far cry from these breeds, but I have ALWAYS had my heart set on a Husky. I think they are the most beautiful dogs, and every Husky I've met has always been loveable. Actually, I'd be happy with a 150 pound Giant Malamute, but Larry quickly put the kibosh on that idea! :D You see, I have a tendency to live in a perfect little dream world, and Larry is my tether to reality. As you search for your perfect puppy, it will be important for you to have a tether as well!

While we have a yard that allows for some running and nice walking paths around, we needed to be very cognizant of our willingness to exercise the dog as well as the free space available to them. A Husky probably required just a bit more space than we currently can provide. Never fear - this put me on the path of a madwoman to seek a mini-Husky breed. Much to my surprise, these DO exist! A few options include Shiba Inus, Alaskan Klee Kais, and, of course, Pomskies!

After a lot of research, we determined that Shiba Inus may not do well in our climate and the Klee Kai temperament tends to be quite aloof, almost that of a cat. I wanted a cuddle monster, so this left us with a very interesting prospect in the new designer breed Pomsky.

Pomskies are a designer breed with heritage from Pomeranian, Siberian Husky, or American Eskimo. They are a very new breed with earliest generations only dating back to around 2014. While Pomskies range from 15-30 pounds and all colors, the goal is to re-create the signature Husky look in a smaller package. Officially, they are known as Arctic Spitz which means once they've been bred for several more years, they may be recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) under the breed name "Arctic Spitz". We just think Pomsky is so cute and will likely keep calling them that for now! :)

We found a breeder only 4 hours away in Ames, Iowa, and with whom has been amazing to partner! SZ Pomskies also offers mentor breeding services. Not only do we get a top-of-the-line Pomsky puppy but also guidance from one of the most reputable Pomsky breeders!

Since Larry has always wanted to breed dogs, we decided that being at the forefront of this new breed would be an excellent opportunity. Huskies have always been popular dogs, but many families, like ours, determined they were too big to have. This "mini-Husky" concept opens the doors for more families to have the dog of their dreams.

We are big advocates for responsible breeding and believe strongly that family breeders are the most ethical way to breed. We are strongly against puppy mills as they do not raise their dogs in healthy environments nor take the proper precautions to ensure healthy blood lines. Many of the dogs that end up in shelters are the result of puppy mills. We do genetic testing to ensure healthy blood lines, and we will provide lifelong breeder support to all of our paw-rents. Frigga is our only breeding dam. If we introduce more in the future, it will be with careful thought and consideration.

Most importantly, Frigga is a member of our pack and receives all of the love and attention that a pack member deserves. We cannot wait to shower her future puppies with lots of love before they go to their fur-ever homes. She is our PERFECT mini-Husky and is always willing to provide all of the cuddles we want (plus more)! We can't wait for you to get all of the cuddles from your Pomsky, too!
